Your student attendance matters! Make the most of your teaching

At Â鶹ӰԺ, we want you to be as successful as possible and get the most value from your university experience.

Our tutors are on hand to provide you with support to stretch your knowledge through active learning, which emphasizes engagement with your course materials.

We therefore strongly recommend that you attend all of your classes. We monitor your attendance and will contact you should we have concerns, or if it falls below 80%.

Our Attendance Monitoring Policy (section 4 page 7) will outline in detail everything we expect of all Â鶹ӰԺ students. We have summarised the key points below.

How do I register my attendance?

It’s quick and very easy to do.

The university’s teaching spaces are equipped with a card reader by the door. To register your attendance, simply tap your ID card through the reader when you enter the room.

Please record your attendance during the first 15 minutes of your timetabled activities. If you don’t, you will be recorded as absent.

What if I can’t attend a session?

If you know well in advance that you can’t attend a session (a medical appointment for example), please let your tutor / teaching staff taking the session know as soon as possible.

For sudden illness, please let your tutor know as soon as possible.

If you experience difficulty in attending timetabled activities for any reason, please discuss this with your Personal Tutor, Module Leader or the Faculty Student Advice Centre so that we can help you.

Please do not ask your friend to sign you by giving them your student ID card.

You should never register someone else’s attendance. This is against university policies and could result in you being subjected to disciplinary proceedings, which could lead to your expulsion.

What happens if my attendance is low?

Our student data performance shows that poor attendance results in lower marks or even module failure. This is because attendance and performance in assessments are closely linked.

Irregular attendance is officially recorded, and your attendance will be monitored regularly. If you miss timetabled activities, your faculty will contact you using your university email address.

We will endeavour to help you do your best during your time at Â鶹ӰԺ, so please keep in touch and let us know if there are personal circumstances which may have an impact on your attendance.

Why do you need to monitor my attendance?

It’s our job to give you the tools to ensure you can thrive here at Â鶹ӰԺ. Your classes will require you to actively participate in your learning, where you can benefit from other students as well as your tutors.

By monitoring your attendance, we are able to identify students who may be struggling and this enables us to provide the right support.

Also, by enrolling at university, you make a commitment to external organisations such as the Home Office, the Student Loans Company and the Education and Skills Funding Agency. We have statutory obligations to notify these organisations about students who are not attending or have periods of extended absence.

For international students joining us from abroad, student visas may be revoked if attendance is too low and that will result in deportation. Further details are included in Chapter One of our General Regulations
