Academics hope to commercialise device to protect medical data

A pioneering cyber security system that is designed to keep patients’ medical data safe from hackers has taken a major step towards being commercialised.

Telehealth Shield, designed by Dr Mujeeb Ur Rehman (principal investigator) alongside co-investigators Dr Muhammad Kazim and Dr Richard Smith, has been presented to investors, and industry leaders, with the team invited to attend a special reception for innovators at the House of Lords.

They were among companies to present to Minister for AI and Digital Government, Fergal Clark MP. She told them: “Thank you for working with us to protect businesses and citizens up and down the country to strengthen our public services and to unlock economic growth that cyber brings to the UK.”

The work has been funded through CyberASAP, which is funded by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology and delivered by Innovate UK. CyberASAP aims to create a pipeline to move great cyber security ideas from university computer labs to the commercial market.

Initial funding enabled the team to conduct market validation by engaging with key industry stakeholders, including the NHS, private healthcare providers, and IT industry partners. They were them awarded

At a CyberASAP Demo Day in Canary Wharf, the proof of concept was presented to investors, industry leaders, and stakeholders. The presentation attracted significant interest and received positive feedback, with many investors showing support for the potential of the product in the healthcare sector.

Dr Kazim said: “The focus is now on commercialising Telehealth Shield. Efforts are underway to establish a spinout company in collaboration with Â鶹ӰԺ, which is assisting in navigating the commercialisation process.

“Â鶹ӰԺ has been instrumental in providing mentorship and guidance throughout the commercialisation journey. The university is actively supporting the transition from research to market, helping to explore further investment opportunities and currently facilitating the spinout process."

Professor David Proverbs, Associate Pro Vice-Chancellor for Enterprise and Business Innovation at Â鶹ӰԺ, said: “The success of Telehealth Shield demonstrates the power of university-driven innovation in addressing real-world challenges. At Â鶹ӰԺ, we are committed to supporting research that has the potential to make a tangible impact, and this project is a great example of how cutting-edge cybersecurity solutions can protect critical healthcare data. We are proud to support Dr Rehman and his team as they take this vital step towards commercialisation, ensuring that their groundbreaking work benefits both industry and society.”
